Patriarchy 4.0: How ancient domination is re‑emerging in algorithmic code

In the silent folds of progress, while we celebrate the illusion of completed emancipation, a subterranean mutation is rewriting the rules of an age‑old power.

Patriarchy is restructuring itself through the very technologies that promised to bury it, adapting to the language of modernity like a virus that learns to bypass antibodies. This is not conspiracy theory but archaeology of the present: misogynistic influencers monetize hate speech, algorithms replicate sexist biases, and new forms of symbolic violence masquerade as empowerment. The system is performing a full‑scale reboot.

It is called “liquid neopatriarchy,” a toxic hybrid of tradition and innovation capable of infiltrating the cracks of digital revolution. Take OnlyFans, hailed as a symbol of female self‑determination. Data reveal a chilling paradox: while 1 % of creators earn astronomical sums, 78 % of users report feeling forced to adopt ever more extreme performances to compete in an oversaturated market. Old exploitation has reincarnated as paid subscriptions, turning the female body into an existential NFT where every like is a tribute to timeless voyeurism.

The dystopian genius of this renewed domination lies in its camouflage. Social media—stages of apparent freedom—function as deforming mirrors: hashtags such as #GirlBoss or #SelfMade conceal a subliminal extortion. “Be an entrepreneur of yourself” often means “turn your life into a financial asset,” reproducing exploitation dynamics that Marx would have labelled “alienation 2.0.” Even the body‑positive movement, originally a revolt against beauty standards, is being devoured by a performance aesthetic that converts self‑esteem into engagement metrics.

But it is in artificial intelligence that patriarchy makes its quantum leap. Automated recruitment systems, trained on historic data, perpetuate gender discrimination with unsettling precision. Sex‑styled chatbots, given submissive female voices, crystallise millennial stereotypes into binary code. The algorithm is not bias‑free; it inherits the prejudices of its creators—predominantly white men from Silicon Valley—who are, often unknowingly, drafting a new constitution of digital domination.

Resistance exists. Collectives such as #CyberFemme and #AlgorithmicJustice are mapping these distortions with the precision of bias hunters. Yet the battle is uneven: for every corrected algorithm, ten new deep‑fake pornographic videos flood the dark web, turning women’s bodies into virtual conquest territories.

The cruelest paradox? This patriarchal restructuring proceeds with the unconscious complicity of progressive‑sounding marketing. Companies that unfurl rainbow flags during Pride Month are often the same ones deploying sexually discriminatory biometric surveillance. “Pink” campaigns for STEM hide a double bind: they encourage women to enter tech while leaving intact the hierarchies that decide how that tech will be used.

New digital spiritualities also provide a disguise. On TikTok, male gurus preaching “the sacredness of the feminine” amass followers by offering a mystic of complementarity that smells a lot like a return to the hearth. Meditation apps sell “divorced” packages narrated by ethereal female voices—a modern version of Ovidian sirens tamed to serve male listening. Even the unconscious has become a gendered product.

The real danger lies in the distorted mirror effect: the more women believe they are advancing, the more the system regenerates in fresh forms. Consider “pink quotas” on corporate boards: while symbolic seats are filled, 92 % of venture‑capital funds still flow to male‑led startups. Or the boom of female‑focused gaming: for every woman streamer who breaks through on Twitch, a hundred endure vocal harassment during live sessions. Empowerment becomes a high‑tech glass trap, where each victory opens a new frontier of control.

What, then, is the remedy? Not an apocalyptic rejection of technology, but a new political alphabet capable of hacking patriarchal reprogramming. We need a cyber‑feminism that unites post‑humanist philosophers with rebellious programmers, digital unions with 2.0 jurists. Yet the revolution must start with language. Labeling oppression as “innovation” is already a defeat. Perhaps we should call it “patriarchy by proxy” or “proxy domination” to expose its chameleon nature. As philosopher Rosi Braidotti writes, “Power does not disappear; it learns to swim in fluidity.” It is up to us to become electric fish in those same oceans.

In the end, the burning question remains: can we truly defeat a system that regenerates through our own victories? The answer may lie in a paradox: to overthrow Patriarchy 4.0, we must first stop thinking of it as an external enemy. It lives inside our smartphones, in the code of the apps we love, in the logics we accept as “normal.” Destroying it will require not hammers, but existential antiviruses.

As Carla Lonzi warned, “Freedom is not conquered; it is unlearned.” Perhaps, in that unlearning, lies the only genuinely revolutionary upgrade.
