É iniziata il 16 giugno e continuerà fino al 2 agosto la mostra “World Press Photo 2020” al Palazzo delle Esposizioni di Roma .
La rassegna, presenta in anteprima nazionale le 139 foto finaliste del prestigioso concorso internazionale di fotogiornalismo che dal 1955 premia ogni anno i migliori fotografi professionisti. L’esposizione è ideata dalla World Press Photo Foundation di Amsterdam, promossa da Roma Capitale – Assessorato alla Crescita culturale e organizzata dall’Azienda Speciale Palaexpo in collaborazione con 10b Photography.
Per questa 63° edizione, la giuria formata da esperti internazionali ha esaminato i lavori di 4.282 fotografi,
provenienti da 125 paesi per un totale di 73.996 immagini. Sono arrivati in finale 44 fotografi, provenienti
da 24 paesi.
Yasuyoshi Chiba è risultato il vincitore della foto dell’anno con Straight Voice.
Lo scatto ritrae un giovane che, illuminato dai telefoni cellulari dei suoi compagni, recita poesie nel corso di una manifestazione di protesta che reclama un governo democratico per il Sudan, durante un blackout a Khartum, il 19 giugno 2019.
Ha spiegato il presidente della giuria Lekgetho Makola: “Soprattutto in un tempo in cui c’è molta violenza e molti conflitti, è importante un’immagine che possa ispirare le persone. E qui vediamo questo giovane che non sta sparando, non lancia sassi, ma recita una poesia. Esprime un senso profondo di speranza”.
Ad aggiudicarsi il premio “World Press Photo Story of the Year” è stato Romain Laurendeau con Kho, The Genesis of Revolt. Kho, nel colloquiale arabo nordafricano, significa fratello. Il reportage racconta il profondo disagio della gioventù algerina che, sfidando le autorità, ha spinto il resto della popolazione a unirsi alla loro azione, dando vita al più grande movimento di protesta dell’Algeria degli ultimi decenni. Tra i finalisti anche sei italiani: Fabio Bucciarelli, Luca Locatelli, Alessio Mamo (classificatosi secondo nella categoria “General News, foto singola”), Nicolò Filippo Rosso, Lorenzo Tugnoli e Daniele Volpe. In mostra, per la prima volta, anche una selezione delle foto iconiche che hanno vinto il premio come Foto dell’Anno dal 1955 ad oggi. Oltre alle foto, verrà presentata per il secondo anno anche una sezione dedicata al Digital Storytelling con una serie di video che raccontano gli eventi cruciali del nostro tempo.
La mostra “World Press Photo 2020” si conferma come l’appuntamento che dimostra e restituisce al mondo intero la enorme capacità documentale e narrativa delle immagini, rivelandone il fondamentale ruolo di testimonianza storica del nostro tempo. Quest’anno l’esposizione, per favorire una maggior fruizione da parte del pubblico, durerà due settimane in più rispetto ai canonici 30 giorni delle passate edizioni.

Belasse Tchari got up every morning of his life to work in his field, feed his 7 children and buy enough money to wash their uniforms. In two years, the footballers from the village of Gouande, in northern Benin, have made their mark and blazed new trails. Refusing to be confined to the status of women who are fragile, incompetent or solely dedicated to motherhood, they have come together to defend their place on all the fields.

Motha’s leg was amputated when he was 11-years-old after being diagnosed with cancer.
“He had dreams of being a professional soccer player but quickly realised that he wouldn’t be able to pursue this dream.
He joined the Vuyani Dance Theatre last year and found his passion.”
The company was involved with the University of KwaZulu Natal Drama and Performance Department Pietermaritzburg when they hosted internationally renowned dancer, choreographer, teacher, director and scriptwriter Gregory Maqoma at this year’s Dance Experia Festival. The festival included a masterclasses which was open to the public and ended with a solo performance of Ketima by Maqoma, followed by Rise by Vuyani Dance Theatre choreographers.
